FPSB Convenes Expert Panel to Create Integrated Financial Planning Education Course

Course to Help Students Master the Financial Planning Process, Client Engagements

DENVER – 23 July 2010 – Financial Planning Standards Board Ltd. (FPSB), the preeminent international standards-setting body for financial planning and owner of the CFP, CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER and CFP Logo marks outside the United States, convened an international panel of financial planning practitioners, educators and certification experts this week to develop an integrated financial planning education course. The course, with some localization, can be used by educators and trainers around the world to help students apply the theory of financial planning to real-world, client situations.

“At present, it is possible for individuals to complete a financial planning course without creating or presenting a financial plan,” said Deena Katz, CFP, associate professor at Texas Tech University’s Division of Personal Financial Planning in the U.S.  “FPSB’s course would give entrants to the financial planning profession the capability to draft comprehensive, professional financial plans.”

Chaired by Wessel Oosthuizen, CFP, director of financial planning law at the University of the Free State in South Africa, the expert panel will create a global education course by year end that will show students how to apply theoretical knowledge to real-world financial planning client situations, and allow students to engage in interviewing and communications techniques that support the delivery of  viable financial plans. Once finalized, the integrated financial planning education course could also be used by certifying bodies as part of their continuing professional development programs for financial planning practitioners.

“In many emerging countries, like China, the financial planning profession is in an early stage of development,” said Feng Liu, Ph.D.  chairperson of FPSB China and Adjunct Professor, Desautel Faculty of Management of McGill University and Faculty of Economics at Nankai University in China.  “In these markets, financial planners look to FPSB’s rigorous competency, ethics and practice standards for guidance.  This course will be a great resource for financial planners looking to improve the quality of their work.”

In addition to Oosthuizen, Katz and Liu, expert panel participants included Paul Grimes, CFP, chief executive officer of FPSB Ireland and a consultant and lecturer at University College Dublin, Ireland; Ralph Jakob, Ph.D., CFP, CEP, CFEP, academic director of the Private Finance Institute, European Business School, International University Schloss Reichartshausen in Germany; Lawrence Lynch, Co-coordinator and Professor, Financial Planning Services Program, Fanshawe College in Canada; Kyra Morris, CFP, Practicing Financial Planning Professional, founder of U.S. Residency Program; and Trevor Williamson CFP, FCIB, FHEA, Principal Lecturer, Manchester Metropolitan University Business School and also member of the Senior Faculty of the ifs School of Finance in the United Kingdom.
