History of CFP Certification

The first CFP professionals appeared on the world stage in 1973, when 42 individuals graduated from the U.S.-based College for Financial Planning in Denver, Colorado. Committed to a process that considered all aspects of a client’s life and financial situation, these pioneers spread the word of a new profession called financial planning, and financial advisers from other territories began to take note of the young profession.

CFP certification has grown from just 10,000 CFP professionals in the U.S. in 1985, to more than 145,000 CFP professionals in 24 territories around the world at the end of 2012. More than half of CFP professionals practice outside the U.S.

FPSB was formed in December 2004 to manage, develop and operate certification, education and related programs for international financial planning organizations. To administer the CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER certification program, FPSB enters into licensing and affiliation agreements with the preeminent nonprofit financial planning standards-setting or professional body. By meeting and maintaining FPSB’s affiliation requirements and standards, FPSB Members are authorized to administer the CFP certification program in a territory on behalf of FPSB.

FPSB owns the CFP Marks outside the U.S. and sets international competency, ethics and professional practice standards for the financial planning profession. Certified Financial Planner Board of Standards Inc. owns the CFP Marks in the U.S.
